Better Nutrition = Better Brain

I recently watched “Team Sherzai”’s webinar regarding How to Avoid Alzheimer’s and Build a Better Brain (link below- please watch!) Bottom line, a healthy diet can help prevent brain diseases by reducing cholesterol and blood pressure while improving blood flow and antioxidant capacity. A decline in brain health is not something we need to just accept as we age! Research shows that saturated and trans fats found (consumption of dairy, meat and fried foods) can increase the risk for cognitive decline. A plant-based diet can help protect your brain health. Berries and foods rich in vitamin E, including nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and whole grains are especially beneficial.

Here is an excerpt from "How Not to Die by Dr. Greger:

“Diet and lifestyle changes could potentially prevent millions of [alzheimer] cases a year. How? There is an emerging consensus that ‘what is good for our hearts is also good for our heads.’ because clogging of the arteries inside of the brain with atherosclerotic plaque is thought to play a pivotal role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. It is not surprising, then, that the dietary centerpiece of the 2014 “Dietary and Lifestyle Guidelines for the Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease,” published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, was “Vegetables, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), fruits, and whole grains should replace meats and dairy products as primary staples of the diet.” Excerpt from page 51 in How Not to Die by Dr. Micheal Greger.
